Forklift FAQs
A counterbalance forklift is the most common type of forklift used in materials handling, characterised by its design that uses a heavy weight at the rear of the truck to offset, or "counterbalance," the load being lifted at the front.
Key Features and Functionality
Counterweight: A large mass of cast iron or steel is integrated into the rear of the truck frame. In electric models, the heavy battery often serves as part of the counterweight. This weight ensures the truck remains stable and does not tip forward when lifting and transporting heavy loads.
Forks: The forks project directly from the front of the machine without any stabilising outriggers or arms. This design allows the operator to drive the truck right up to the load or shelving location for direct lifting.
Versatility: They are highly versatile and suitable for a wide range of tasks, including loading/unloading vehicles, moving pallets, and stacking goods. They can be used effectively for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Power Options: Counterbalance Forklifts are available with various power sources - electric, LPG and diesel.
A reach truck is a specialized type of electric forklift primarily designed for efficient operation in racking aisles of approximately 3 meters to access high-level racking (up to 12.5 metres) in warehouses and distribution centers.
Its name comes from its defining feature: a mast that can extend the forks forward, allowing it to "reach" into racking to pick up or deposit a load.
Key Features and Functionality
Extendable Mast/Forks: The entire mast moves forward and backward.
Picking & Placing a Load: The mast moves forward to place the forks under the pallet.
Travel: The mast retracts, pulling the load back into the truck's wheelbase. This shifts the load's weight over the stabilizing legs, which is crucial for balancing the load without needing a large rear counterweight
Aisle Width Requirement: With a compact chassis and a tight turning radius, reach trucks can operate in aisles that are significantly narrower than those required for a standard counterbalance forklift..
Lift Heights: Reach Trucks are built to lift loads to significant heights, often reaching in excess of 12 meters.
Power Source: Reach Trucks are always battery powered, making them quiet, emissions-free, and perfectly suited for indoor use on smooth, level floors.
Driver Position: A Reach Truck driver sits in a position parallel to the load, this position improves visibility and reduces operator fatigue when driving in reverse or constantly looking up.
A pallet stacker is a piece of material handling equipment designed to lift, move, and stack palletized loads at various heights, particularly in confined or indoor spaces.
It is essentially a cross between a standard pallet truck (which only moves loads at ground level) and a full-sized forklift (which is larger and handles heavier loads at extreme heights).
Key Characteristics and Functionality
Lifting Capability: The defining feature is the addition of a mast that allows the forks to lift pallets up for shelving, stacking, or loading/unloading from vehicles.
Manoeuvrability: Pallet Stackers are highly compact and easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for small warehouses, retail stockrooms, or production areas with narrow aisles where a larger counterbalance or reach truck cannot operate.
Operator Type:
Pedestrian (Walkie) Stacker: The most common type. The operator walks behind the truck and controls it using a tiller-style handle. These usually do not require a formal forklift license in all jurisdictions.
Ride-On/Stand-On Stacker: Includes a platform for the operator to stand on, making them more suitable for covering longer travel distances within a larger facility.
Power: Pallet Stackers are typically powered by electric batteries, providing quiet, zero-emission operation for indoor use.
Load Balancing: Similar to reach trucks, pallet stackers use straddle legs located in front/either side of the mast to stabilize the load. Counterbalance stackers are also available which utilise a rear counterweight to counterbalance the load on the forks.
There are various different types of stacker available, be aware that the more standard variations are designed to operate in conjunction with handling Euro Pallets which have no bottom board.
A powered pallet truck is a material handling vehicle designed to lift and move palletised loads horizontally across a warehouse, distribution centre, or retail floor.
It is an upgrade from a manual pallet jack because it uses a battery-powered electric motor to assist with the primary tasks.
Key Features and Functionality
The main purpose of a powered pallet truck is to drastically reduce the physical effort required by the operator, making it essential for high-volume, long-distance, or heavy-load applications.
Powered Drive (Movement): Unlike a hand pallet truck which requires the operator to push or pull the load, the powered pallet truck uses an electric motor to move the load forward and backward. This feature is the biggest advantage for moving heavy pallets over long distances.
Powered Lift: The operator only needs to press a button to lift the load a few inches off the ground. In the case of a hand pallet truck, the operator must repeatedly pump the handle to lift the load.
Horizontal Transport: The Powered Pallet Truck is designed primarily for moving pallets at ground level. It cannot lift pallets to high racking shelves like a stacker truck or forklift.
Powered Pallet Trucks can be supplied in either walk behind or ride on configurations. Longer legged variants can be supplied facilitating the handling of more than one pallet at a time.
